Welcome to Spain

1 oktober 2016 - Almería, Spanje

After having spent the summer in Groningen, on September 9th it was finally time to move again. Julia and I flew to Almería from Charleroi Airport in Belgium. We chose this as it was the only way to fly to Almería directly.

We moved into an apartment above a (very cheap) tapas restaurant: La Cabaña de Tio Tom. Here we met our German roommate Jasmin. We got the apartment through a dutch student who lived there a previous semester. As we checked the apartment out, we realized we walked into a disaster. It seemed as if the owners had only moved out the day before as the dirty dishes were still on the kitchen table, the tomatoes were slowly rotting in the fridge and well lets not mention the bathroom. Our first official day in town we spent cleaning the apartment for eight hours. So much fun... not. We even spent about 60 euros to do so. The apartment did have direct view on the beach and only costs 200 euros per month per person. For us this included the WIFI, but not gas, water and light. For this we receive a separate bill.

The first weeks we spent primarily just laying on the beach, getting to know people, joining the ESN and going out. We even bought a bike (90 euros), as is dutch tradition. The alternative is to buy a bus pass for 27 euros per month. It is about 5 km from our apartment to the University, one that looks very different from the Hanze, yet beautiful.

After two weeks of spending entire days on the beach and the time came to start Uni, we also decided to join the local gym: Ego Sportcenter. If you are under the age of 22 it costs only 28 euros per month, sadly I am already 22 and so it costs 41 euros. I also started a Spanish language course (B2), which costs 200 euros and is two hours, twice a week.

Sorry this blog was a little boring, but it includes just the practical information. Next blog will be about life in Almería!
